Supratiek Ghosh’s Musical Journey: From Childhood Prodigy to Industry Pioneer
Supratiek Ghosh was born on February 1, 1970, in Kolkata, India, into a family with a rich artistic legacy. He is the son of the late Shyamal Ghosh, an acclaimed Bengali filmmaker, theater artist, and radio personality, and Shelly Ghosh. He is also the grandson of legendary playback singer Geeta Dutt.
Raised in a musically vibrant environment, Supratiek was influenced by artists such as R.D. Burman, Kishore Kumar, Salil Chowdhury, Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey, Michael Jackson, and Boney M. As a tribute to his father’s legacy and inspired by numerology, he incorporated his father’s name into his own. The passing of both his father and Kishore Kumar in 1987 strengthened his resolve to pursue music.
Supratiek attended Julien Day School in Kolkata and later earned a commerce degree from South City College, affiliated with Calcutta University. Despite his father’s initial reluctance for him to pursue music professionally, he was determined to build a sustainable ecosystem for musicians beyond the traditional industry model.
In 2000, Supratiek founded AURKO, a Bangalore-based band known for its live performances across India and beyond. As the lead singer, composer, and songwriter, he has been performing for over 25 years (2000–2025).
Supratiek began performing at the age of four at Sai Bhajan gatherings attended by film and music personalities. By high school, he was participating in inter-school competitions, consistently winning annual music contests.
At 17, he formed his first band while in college and soon began working with industry professionals under organizers like Gora Uzir and Siben Das. Performing over 20 shows a month, at times managing four in a single day, he quickly gained recognition in the music circuit.
Despite his father’s reservations about the uncertainty of a music career, Supratiek was encouraged to create his own opportunities. His father instilled in him a philosophy of independence—“Be the industry rather than just a part of it”—which later shaped his approach to music entrepreneurship.
Influenced by a diverse range of genres, including Bhajans, folk, modern Bengali music, Hindi film songs, Rabindra Sangeet, and Western pop, Supratiek developed a distinctive musical style. His energetic renditions of Kishore Kumar's classics brought him to the attention of BM Shah, a key talent scout for T-Series, and Subrata Roychowdhury, T-Series' Regional Manager for East India.
This led to his introduction to Ajit Kohli, Head of A&R at T-Series, and later Darshan Kumar, under whose mentorship he recorded at Golden Chariot, Sudeep Studios, and T-Series Studio in Noida. He gained early recognition through cover recordings for T-Series, marking the beginning of his professional journey in the industry.
